Where Gender Goes to Die, 2021
Location
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Role
Creator, Performer
Project type
Performance Art
Date
November, 2021
This was a performance installation I made in October of 2021. The installation was about gender euphoria vs dysphoria. All the clothing you see in the video are clothes taken from my closet and the closets of other queer and trans people. These are the clothes that we hold onto even though they make us feel uncomfortable in our gender expression. They chain our true selves down. The audio in this video is a shortened version of the recordings that were playing in the room, which were other queer and trans people talking about their experiences with gender euphoria.
In the first room, I was surrounded by plants, watering them, myself, and anyone who wished to be cleansed of their gender. I wanted to show how my queerness feels connected to nature and life, and how I use the natural world to cleanse myself of binaries.
The project was attached to the Colorado College course TH304: Advanced Performance, Installation Performance taught by Patrizia Herminjard and the Degenerate Art Ensemble (@degenerateartensemble on Instagram).
